What are New York electric bike laws?

New York electric bike laws regulate the use of electric bikes within the state. In April 2020, New York legalized the use of electric bikes with certain restrictions. Class 1 and Class 2 electric bikes are permitted on New York roads and bike paths, while Class 3 electric bikes are allowed only if the rider is 16 years or older, wears a helmet, and operates the bike in pedal-assist Mode. The maximum speed for electric bikes is 20 mph. However, it is important to note that local municipalities have the authority to set their own rules and regulations regarding electric bike usage, so it is always a good idea to check with local authorities before riding an electric bike in New York.
